A modern interface for Windows 10

This short video recalls the history of Windows, featuring the very first Microsoft logo, and highlights the strong elements of the brand according to the Redmond company, such as the inclusivity of the system.

The most interesting part for us is at the end of the video where Panos Panay shows us Windows 10 transforming to adopt a new interface. Unfortunately, due to Instagram’s limitations, the video is extremely low in definition.

Let’s start by discovering a new start menu where we can find a dynamic tile for Outlook, a new version of the Weather app, or the new icons for Notepad and the Office suite.

Without a doubt, the most interesting and surprising element of the video. In the span of a second, you can see an interonnew version of the file explorer. The interface has been completely redesigned and integrates quick links to storage spaces such as an external hard drive, Google Drive, or OneDrive, as well as favorite folders.

The interface has nothing to do with the outdated Windows 10 File Explorer, which has been improved through iterations but can be traced back to Windows Vista or even earlier.

You can also view a new context menu using Microsoft Fluent Design. New actions seem to be offered such as “Activate,” “Focus In,” or “Focus Out.”

Other system applications such as the calendar or the photo app also get a new interface, but the differences here are less noticeable since these applications have already been updated by the Microsoft teams.

Beware of design dreams

You should always be cautious with this video. While it clearly illustrates a new vision from Microsoft for Windows 10, it is probably not a trailer for a future version of the system.

This means that the transition to this vision will likely occur through several updates of Windows 10 and that, as development progresses, Microsoft will probably evolve this vision.

If Microsoft does indeed change the Windows 10 file explorer, its final version may be radically different from what we have seen here because the teams may realize that this version is not practical for daily use, for example.

We will have to wait for more concrete announcements from Microsoft than just a tease, whatever it may be officially, to learn more about this profound change in the interface. One thing is certain, this new vision puts sparkles in our eyes.
